1. IGU Session: GEOGRAPHIES AND EARTH SCIENCES FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH: New perspectives and elements for debate

Rubén C. Lois González

Although scientific knowledge in general, and geographical knowledge in particular, has been largely developed in Europe and North America, this dynamic is beginning to shift in recent times. Contributions and case studies on Geography and sustainability, climate change, and biodiversity loss are showing significant contributions from emerging countries and the Global South. The same is true for the study of mass migrations and new patterns of human mobility, as well as for understanding phenomena such as poverty and inequality. This session aims to document this change and explain how geographical knowledge of great importance is being built from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In fact, alongside the numerous practical analyses presented throughout the GORILLA Conference, the session seeks to explore the theoretical and conceptual contributions being made to Earth and territorial sciences by countries that are consolidating their academic structures. The IGU is promoting this debate and will seek to record the main contributions made, thus fulfilling its historical mission of disseminating geographical knowledge from a diverse and international perspective.
