2022 Theme & Sub-themes

The global scars of the COVID-19 pandemic and its spatial and temporal dimensions are well illustrated. Geographic tools were essential in the unravelling of the COVID-19 pandemic in space and time. Equally, geographic knowledge, tools and techniques are critical in the sustainable recovery from COVID-19 pandemic. Under this subtheme, we seek presentations that help to better understand the processes, consequences, context and dimensions of COVID-19, including factors that informed either vulnerability or resilience in varied socioecological systems.

Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) is increasingly becoming urbanized with projections indicating a significant proportion of the population being in urban areas by 2050. How sustainable are the ongoing urbanization processes in Africa? Are cities a panacea for sustainable livelihoods? Is the notion of smart cities achievable in SSA? What are the challenges of an urbanizing SSA, and how best can they be resolved?

The consequences of human and physical processes on ecosystem services and products have a strong spatial and temporal context. In this subtheme, we seek for presentations that tackle biogeography, biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. What are the conditions underpinning changes in ecosystems, ecosystem services and products? What interventions have yielded positive results in terms of recovery? How best can we propel ecosystem integrity under changing conditions? What governance and policy frameworks best guarantee the integrity of ecosystems? How can conservation biogeography be propelled in sensitive and fragile landscapes? How can the emergency of data science drive improved conservation of threatened species, landscapes and people?

Migration and displacement have increased in diverse localities triggered by a range of factors, including conflict, disasters, climate change, economic opportunities, environment, urbanization, among others.  The common narrative around migration and displacement is that they are strongly associated with negative social, economic, cultural and ecological consequences. What are the contexts and dimensions of migration in the source and destination areas? What are the benefits and costs of migration and displacement? What are the trade-offs in migration and displacement? How do environmental and climate induced migration compare with other triggers? What influences the positive or negative consequences of migration and displacement in diverse regions? Under this theme, we will accept abstracts that address the above, as well as other pressing issues surrounding migration and displacement.

Water resources are critically essential for the resilience of physical and human systems. The Anthropocene signature on water resources and water systems is very visible in various geographies. How does the combination of demographic changes, urbanization and global environmental change alter the water resources dynamics? Where are the critical signatures of the Anthropocene visible on water resources? How best can water resources and dependent livelihood systems be secured? We welcome abstracts focussed on water resources in all dimensions and at all scales, including water pollution and quality, water demands, watershed management and associated issues, impacts of climate change, land use change and transformations on water quality, human impacts on water resources and systems, and water-energy-food fluxes.

Sustainable utilization of environment and natural resources is at the heart of achieving the Global Development Agenda 2030. The fundamental question has always been “how do we secure the quality land and soil resource so as to continuously provide the requisite products and services for humanity”? already, the world is contending with soil, water, forest and vegetation degradation, which has reached alarming rates in some geographies. Land Degradation Neutrality is intended to propel practices that prevent degradative processes and enhance land quality. Under this theme, we will accept abstracts that illustrate the state, nature and processes of resource degradation. We will also accept abstracts that are focussed on measures and practices geared to achievement of land degradation neutrality.

Under the Paris Agreement, the international community committed itself to keeping temperatures within the 1.50C threshold. climate change is posing severe challenges in rainfed systems, culminating into low yields and low productivity, particularly for smallholder communities in Africa. Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) has been propounded and promoted as a vehicle which can enable mitigation, adaptation and thrivability of systems and societies, especially in developing countries. This subtheme will accept abstracts that reflect advances in our understanding of climate change and its impacts with respect to various domains. More specifically, abstracts with an orientation on climate smart agriculture will be prioritized.

Hydro-meteorological hazards are increasingly becoming prominent owing to their adverse impact on ecosystems and community livelihood. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-203 underscores the need for science and new knowledge on natural hazards as a springboard for cultivating solutions to better protect communities.

With climate change and climate variability very evident and manifesting through increasing frequency and magnitude of extreme events, such as floods, drought, landslides and altered seasons, among others, there are increasing arguments that optimizing nature-based solutions offers the best protection. This subtheme envisage a wide spectrum of presentations, spanning natural hazards, disaster risk management and potential solutions, especially those centred on nature best solutions.
